Emergency Response Plan

Purpose. Sets out how Nexus prepares for and responds to fire, chemical release, serious injury, structural collapse and other emergencies at each site.

1.Purpose and scope

This plan applies to all Nexus sites and to all workers, contractors and visitors. It supports the site emergency procedures displayed at each exit and the training of wardens and first aiders. The plan is tested by an evacuation drill at each site every six months.

2.Emergency control organisation

Each site has a chief warden, deputy chief warden, area wardens for each department and first aiders on every shift. Their names and photographs are displayed at the emergency control point in the main office. Wardens have authority to direct an evacuation and must not be overruled during an emergency.

3.Fire

Fire is the most likely emergency because of hot work, flammable liquids and paint booths. On discovering a fire, raise the alarm, alert the warden and only attempt to extinguish it if it is small and you are trained. Wardens will evacuate the area and account for all persons at the assembly point. Nobody re-enters until the chief warden gives the all clear.

• Account for every person against the sign in register

4.Chemical release

For a spill or release of paint, solvent or hardener, stop the source if safe, keep people upwind and away, and use the spill kit for small spills. For a large release or any release that reaches a drain, evacuate the area, call emergency services and notify the Production Planning and Support Manager for regulator notification.

5.Serious injury

Call the first aider and emergency services, do not move the person unless they are in danger, and preserve the scene. The Safety and Training Coordinator must be notified immediately so that the regulator is notified where required. Nominated managers will contact the injured person's emergency contact.

6.Crane, structural or vehicle emergency

For a dropped load, structural failure, vehicle collision in the yard or a person trapped, clear the area, isolate power to the crane or plant, call emergency services and do not attempt a rescue that puts others at risk. Wardens will control access until emergency services arrive.

7.Recovery and review

After any emergency or drill, the chief warden will debrief the wardens within 24 hours and record the lessons. The plan, the site procedures and the training will be updated within one month. Workers affected by a serious event will be offered support through the employee assistance program.
