Purpose. Used by supervisors and leading hands to plan, deliver and record the weekly toolbox talk with their crew.

1.Purpose

Toolbox talks are short, focused conversations about safety, quality and production held at the start of a shift. They keep controls fresh, share lessons from incidents and non-conformances and give the crew a routine chance to raise hazards and improvement ideas. Every department must hold at least one each week.

2.Choosing a topic

Choose a topic relevant to the crew this week: a recent incident or near miss, a repeat non-conformance, a new product or chemical, a seasonal hazard such as heat in the booth or wet floors in the yard, or a change to a work instruction. The Safety and Training Coordinator publishes a topic calendar each month.

3.Delivering the talk

Keep it to ten minutes. State the issue, show the control at the workplace where possible, ask the crew what they see and record their comments. Close by confirming what each person will do differently.

  • State the issue
  • Show the control
  • Ask the crew
  • Record actions

4.Attendance

Every attendee must print and sign their name. Workers who were absent must receive the talk from the leading hand before their next shift and sign then.

5.Follow up

Enter any hazard raised during the talk on an Incident and Hazard Report Form and any improvement idea on a Continuous Improvement Proposal. File the completed record with the Safety and Training Coordinator within two working days.
