Work Health and Safety Policy

Purpose. States the commitment of Nexus to the health and safety of its workers, contractors and visitors and the framework for meeting its duties under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011.

1.Commitment

Nexus will provide a safe and healthy workplace at every site and will eliminate risks so far as is reasonably practicable and otherwise minimise them using the hierarchy of control. Safety performance is reviewed at every daily production meeting and every monthly management meeting. No delivery date justifies a shortcut on safety.

2.Principal hazards

Heavy vehicle body building brings together several high risk activities in one building. Managers must ensure the documented controls for each are in place before work starts.

• Welding fume, arc radiation and hot work fire
• Overhead cranes, lifting and suspended loads
• Isocyanate paints and solvents
• Working at height on trailers and bus roofs
• Guillotines, press brakes and saws
• Forklifts and vehicle movements in the yard
• Manual handling of panels and components
• Noise and vibration from grinding and air tools

3.Responsibilities

The General Manager holds the officer duty and must exercise due diligence. Department managers and supervisors must ensure workers are trained, supervised and equipped for the task and must stop work that is unsafe. Workers must follow procedures, use the controls provided, wear the personal protective equipment specified, report hazards and incidents the same shift and must not operate plant they are not authorised to operate.

4.Consultation

Health and safety representatives are elected for each site. The safety committee meets monthly and its minutes are displayed in each lunchroom. Toolbox talks are held weekly in every department and workers will be consulted before changes to plant, chemicals, processes or layout that affect their safety.

5.Incident management

All injuries, near misses, hazards and property damage must be reported on the Incident and Hazard Report Form and entered in the safety register before the end of the shift. Notifiable incidents must be reported to the Safety and Training Coordinator immediately so that the regulator can be notified and the scene preserved. Serious incidents will be investigated and the findings shared through toolbox talks.

6.Health monitoring

Workers exposed to isocyanates will receive health monitoring as required by the regulations, including baseline and periodic assessment. Audiometric testing will be provided for workers in designated noise areas. Respirator fit testing will be completed before any worker uses a tight fitting respirator and repeated annually.
