Purpose. Lists the plant, lifting equipment, welding machines, booths, hoists and measuring equipment at each site with their inspection, service and calibration requirements and the person responsible.

1.How the register is used

The register is the master list of every item of plant that requires inspection, service, calibration or statutory registration. Maintenance uses it to schedule preventive work in the maintenance system, supervisors use it to confirm an item is in date before use, and the safety committee reviews overdue items every month.

2.Cranes and lifting equipment

Overhead cranes, jib cranes, chain blocks, slings, lifting beams and vehicle hoists are inspected before use by the operator, inspected quarterly by maintenance and inspected annually by a competent person. Items with a registrable design are recorded with their registration status. Any item that fails inspection must be tagged out and removed from service.

  • Overhead crane 10 tonne, fabrication shop: annual inspection due November 2026
  • Overhead crane 5 tonne, assembly hall: annual inspection due March 2027
  • Four post vehicle hoist, final inspection bay: quarterly inspection
  • Chain blocks and slings: tagged with quarterly colour code

3.Welding and cutting equipment

Welding machines, plasma cutters, oxy fuel sets and fume extraction units are serviced six monthly and tested and tagged every three months. Flashback arrestors and regulators are checked at each service. Extraction airflow is measured at each service and recorded.

4.Machines

Guillotines, press brakes, saws, drills and grinders are inspected for guarding and interlocks monthly by the supervisor and serviced by maintenance at the manufacturer's interval. Any guard or interlock defect must be reported immediately and the machine isolated.

5.Paint booths

Spray booths are checked for airflow before each session, filters are changed at the interval or when airflow drops below the limit, and the booth, extraction and lighting are serviced six monthly. The mixing room extraction is tested quarterly.

6.Measuring and test equipment

Torque wrenches, pressure gauges, film thickness gauges, multimeters, the weighbridge and compliance tape measures are calibrated at the interval listed and carry a calibration label with the due date. Equipment that is overdue must not be used to accept product.

  • Torque wrenches: annual calibration
  • Pressure gauges: annual calibration
  • Film thickness gauge: annual calibration
  • Weighbridge: annual verification

7.Register maintenance

The Production Planning and Support Manager owns the register. New plant must be added before first use with a risk assessment, and disposed plant must be removed with the date of disposal recorded.
